Bird watching

This municipality´s wild coast is witness to a spectacular migratory path, more pronounced during summer-autumn, due to it forming part of a bottleneck through which over a million seabirds fly across, mostly from northern Europe and western Siberia. This corridor has such importance that it has meant its recognition as an Important Area for Bird Conservation, which identifies these waters as places of international importance for bird conservation at European and worldwide level.

There also exists a secondary migration path for land birds, parallel to the coast, which makes this zone a convenient stopover to find refuge and food when there are adverse weather conditions.

To the aforementioned, a wide range of habitats that are present have to be added; open sea, cliffs, estuaries, beaches, dune systems, rivers, bushes, pastures, crops, crags, etc. which enable a high diversity of birds, close to 300 species, in a territory of barely 120km2 .

On top of that, it´s also worth highlighting the interest that this council has for the most expert ornithologists in their desire to find rarities. The geographical location in the western end of mainland Europe has much to do with the eventual appearance of birds from North America, which call in these coasts, especially during the autumn, when they lose their route and are dragged by the prevailing winds towards the opposite side of the Atlantic.
