Lace is one of the best known handicrafts on the Death Coast (Costa da Morte). The movement of skilful hands intertwining bobbins and thread on a cushion, following a pattern, is highly characteristic. The rhythmical sound is almost hypnotic.

Local historian Xan Fernández Carrera tells us how the main lace traders on A Costa da Morte were based in Muxía. They exported to Cuba, Argentina and Mexico, buying lace for the lacemakers, storing it in drawers and then taking it to South America on ships. Many of their distributors there were emigrants from Muxía. Lace was also sold in the rest of Spain.

Thanks to this intense trading the new part of Muxía was built around Cape da Vila. The traders who made their fortunes at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th centuries lived here.

Photographer Ramón Caamaño’s father bought him his first camera thanks precisely to his mother’s lace trade.
